Bezos Earth Fund Recognizes Key Role of Women of Color and Other Frontline Leaders in the US South in Advancing Climate Justice

The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice is pleased to be among the recipients of the Bezos Earth Fund’s most recent round of grant-making to advance climate justice in the US. The Hive Fund’s participatory grantmaking supports those most impacted by pollution and disinvestment, especially in the US South, where climate emissions are high and philanthropic and public investments are low.

This two-year, $10 million grant will allow us to expand support for organizations working to transition the Houston metro region into a cleaner, more resilient, and more just economy. It will also allow us to deepen our support for organizations working on related policy changes and political will at the state level. Philanthropic investment can help community-based groups be better positioned to shape and access larger amounts of public finance, and receive the monetary support that matches their full potential instead of working with pennies on the dollar. Together, these philanthropic and public investments can help transition Houston--an icon of oil and injustice--to an exemplar of an equitable and clean energy future.

This round of climate justice funding is a recognition of the absolutely critical role that Black, Brown, AAPI, and Indigenous women and other frontline leaders play in achieving a just and sustainable society. It also demonstrates a growing awareness among funders of the efficacy of moving resources in ways that shift power and address the harmful systems that create environmental and health disparities and other injustices at the root of the climate crisis we face today. This funding allows us to put resources directly in the hands of the people most impacted by these intersecting injustices – people who have long been building the sustainable and equitable future we all seek.
